HSKK Oral Exam: Complete Guide for Beginners to Advanced
Updated May 2026 · 5 min read
Most Chinese learners know about HSK — but far fewer know about HSKK (汉语水平口语考试), the official oral proficiency exam that tests your ability to speak Mandarin. This guide covers everything: what HSKK is, the three levels, how scoring works, and how to prepare effectively.
🎤 What Is HSKK?
HSKK stands for Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǒuyǔ Kǎoshì(汉语水平口语考试) — literally "Chinese Proficiency Oral Exam." It is administered by Hanban (the Chinese International Chinese Language Education Foundation) and is the speaking counterpart to the written HSK exam.
While HSK tests listening, reading and writing, HSKK focuses exclusively on spoken Chinese. The exam is conducted via a computer: you listen to prompts through headphones and record your responses into a microphone. There is no live examiner.
- 🌍Accepted by universities and employers worldwide as proof of spoken Chinese ability.
- 🎓Often required alongside HSK for Chinese government scholarships (HSK Scholarship).
- 📋Can be taken independently or on the same day as an HSK exam.
- 💻Available as paper-based (PBT) or internet-based (IBT) format.
📊 The 3 HSKK Levels
HSKK has three levels — Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced — each corresponding to a range of written HSK levels.
HSKK Elementary (初级)
- Part 1: Repeat 15 sentences read by the examiner
- Part 2: Answer 10 questions about a short audio clip
- Part 3: Answer 2 open questions based on pictures
HSKK Intermediate (中级)
- Part 1: Repeat 10 sentences
- Part 2: Read a passage aloud, then answer 2 questions about it
- Part 3: Answer 2 open questions on daily-life topics
HSKK Advanced (高级)
- Part 1: Read a passage aloud
- Part 2: Listen to a passage, then talk about it for ~4 minutes
- Part 3: Express your opinion on a given topic for ~4 minutes
Under the new HSK 3.0 system (launched in 2021), oral skills are being integrated into the written exam. However, HSKK remains valid and widely accepted for scholarship applications, university admissions and job requirements. If you are targeting a Chinese government scholarship, HSKK is still required.
🎯 How HSKK Is Scored
Your spoken responses are recorded and evaluated by trained examiners. The total score is out of 100, and you need 60 to pass. There is no partial pass — you either pass or fail as a whole.
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Pronunciation & Tones | 40% |
| Vocabulary & Grammar | 30% |
| Fluency & Coherence | 20% |
| Task Completion | 10% |
📝 How to Prepare for HSKK
Record yourself daily
Listening to your own voice is uncomfortable — but it is the fastest way to catch pronunciation mistakes, awkward pauses and tone errors. Use your phone or any recording app.
Shadow native speakers
Find a Chinese podcast, TV show or YouTube channel and repeat sentences immediately after hearing them. Match the rhythm, speed and tone exactly.
Practice HSKK past papers
Familiarise yourself with the exact question types and timing. Do not just listen — actually record your answers and review them.
Expand your spoken vocabulary
Use Hoa Ngữ 360's vocabulary tools to learn words and immediately practice saying them in sentences. Vocabulary you can only read is not useful in HSKK.
Focus heavily on tones
Tones account for 40% of your score. Get a native speaker or tutor to correct your tone mistakes early. Even one wrongly toned syllable can change the meaning of a sentence.
Hoa Ngữ 360 offers dedicated HSKK practice modules where you can listen to sample prompts, record your responses, and review model answers. The more you practise in a realistic format, the calmer you will feel on exam day.
HSKK is one of the most valuable Chinese credentials you can earn — it proves you can actually use the language, not just pass a written test. With consistent speaking practice and the right preparation strategy, you can pass at your target level and open new doors in study and work.
